Biological Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey
The Biological Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey (formerly National biological Service) currently serves county-level US-wide distribution maps for butterflies and 2 moth families. There are plans to expand the site by adding additional moth families, some with Canadian, Alaskan, and possibly northern Mexican data and by adding informational text. In addition, the agency recently provided funding to add similar pages on other insect groups.

Case Studies for Monitoring Programs
We have taken examples of monitoring programs from around the world and used their data to estimate appropriate sample sizes for programs that use similar techniques and species. While it is always best to use your own pilot data to estimate samples sizes (and we provide you a freeware program to do so) in most cases we lack the time and staff to do so. Fortunately, patterns emerge among situations and species that permit you to often use examples from other studies to conservatively set your sample sizes.
